International D Cabs - Type III: Considered Pre-War and Large size. Buddy L introduced this new restyled line in early '37. The beginning of this D series was a radical design change from previous trucks. Now built with welded all steel cabs, these trucks were larger than the streamlined art deco look of the II series and had the appearance more like a real truck than some futuristic designers idea of what one would look like at some point in the future. The International name is displayed on the hood sides and these had no front bumpers like the IV series. Headlights are mounted to the hood sides and riding versions were available. When Buddy L resumed production of steel units after the war in '45 they released these again but without the "International" name on the hood and offered them as late as '48.

International D Cabs - Type IV: Considered Pre-War and Very Large size. Buddy L began these large trucks in '38 and stopped in the early '40's with the outbreak of the war. Ranging is size from 29 to 33 inches long and some were over 9 inches wide and 15 inches tall. These big steel trucks can weigh around 15 pounds. A few years after the war Buddy L reissued these up to '49 with new grills, headlights, paint and decals. The '48 trucks had the International name on the hood sides but the '49 truck was issued without them. 48's had headlights - fender mounted - close to the grill. The '49/'50 headlights were centered on the fender fronts and were slightly larger but not as large as Type V: headlights.

International D Cabs - Type V: Considered Post War and Medium size, Buddy L changed the look of their Internationals in '49 with an extended hood, altered grill, fender headlights and a heavy bumper. Offered from '49 and into '55 they were assigned rubber tires with steel rims until '53 when they went with all rubber wheels/tires just like the Diamond T's.

International R Model Cabs: were introduced in '53 - offered as late as '60 and replaced the earlier "L's". A minor Grill change was made in '58 to include dual headlights and actually looked more like a '58 Ford Grill on an International truck and in fact is the same grille used on the early "Fords of the 60's" applications where the poly grille/bumper was used.

The '53 Fords: These replaced the last of the International D's in the '54/'55 selling period and offered from '54 to '59. Two grilles were offered on this period truck.

Generic '58 Ford Cabs: From 61 to '64 these trucks were offered with Plastic Grill Guards and "Spring Front Suspension". Mom's loved this furniture safe bumper but it was un-realistic looking and was broke or removed pretty quickly by the "Child in Charge". The same truck without the plastic grill was introduced in '60 and remained mostly unchanged until '70. A minor variation of fenders was introduced in '67. Drivers side mirrors were offered in '60 and '61. If the "Square Hole" is there in the body, then your truck most likely came with one but these were also lost/broken almost immediately. Tires/wheels were issued somewhat intermittently and you could expect to find either whitewalls on two styles of fancy rim/wheel covers or a fatter tire with plain silver look rim and no wheel cover. Windshields were issued with both 1/2 side windows and full side windows. Do you wonder what that large hole is under the cab portion in the bottom of your truck? This was the mount for the twist in battery/light pack that ran the flashing light for the wrecker and fire trucks. Most if not all these trucks have this hole so it must have been simpler and/or cheaper to manufacture this base frame for every truck the same. To date I have never seen a complete truck with its issued battery/light pack. You would collect upwards of 75 or even 80 models if you chose to collect all this period of trucks.

GMC 550 Cabs: Buddy L split up with International in '57 with the announcement of a new line of trucks dubbed the GMC heavy 550 series. Made with plastic wheels, grills, GMC hood emblem device and headlamps. Buddy L offered these trucks from '57 to '60 in a surprisingly large variety. Not all GMC's had the hood emblem - (see item BLP03). The "GMC" hood emblem was sometimes - not always - associated with a grille that contained separated headlights. Occasionally these headlights were metal instead of  plastic like the grille.

Diamond T Cabs: The Real Diamond T company redesigned their light duty conventional cabs in the early '50's. After W.W.II and into the '50's there was a steel shortage so Buddy L began offering their replicated version with plastic cab in '51 and these continued through '54. The early Diamond T's had steel rims and rubber tires but the later versions in '53 had all rubber wheels/tires.

Buddy L History

Prior to the 1940's  Buddy L made their toys and trucks out of pressed steel.  With the outbreak of W.W.II all steel went towards the war effort and wood was the primary component. When the campaign ended Buddy L used plastic momentarily and then went back to the tried and true steel trucks that we restore here.  In the late 70's the company went "Japanese" and at that time, two things happened.  The construction makeup went from a sturdy pressed steel to a metal and plastic composition and they were also down sized to smaller versions.   For some, this meant that rusting was pretty much a thing of the past but it also meant that they weren't as durable and no longer could a 5 year old boy sit on his truck and ride down the sidewalk or even fill it with dirt.  Buddy L's are still being manufactured today - we believe now in China - but you will see that they are now 99% plastic and probably won't survive long enough to need any restoration 50 years from now.

Factory Buddy L Painting

Buddy L used a "tank dip" assembly line style of painting for their toys during the pressed steel era.  For the time it was a quick,  dependable way to color the metal and millions of them were painted this way.    If you turn these trucks over and take a close look you will find many "air pockets" where the paint just did not get applied and also many runs and drips on the surface.    As far as I can tell, this did not hurt sales because lets face it,  kids just didn't critique nor care about paint application.  Today's baby boomers who were those same kids 40 and 50 years ago, have a significant higher standard.  They are not going to the sand box nor will they be ridden down the sidewalk, so they want them to look good while sitting on the desk at work, a shelf in the office, or the den at home. These thoughts and images are a trip back in time to when childhood was simpler - and a lot more fun.

Our Restoration Process
*Please Note - We rarely perform restorations for Customers*

Every Buddy L truck that we acquire and then sell as "Restored" is completely disassembled into the smallest piece that the factory used during assembly. Each piece is straightened and where necessary brazed if original pinch welds have broken. Each individual piece is then sand blasted with a mixture of glass beads and sand to remove the original paint including any rust that may have formed. Rust preventative red oxide primer is then applied and sanded between multiple coats to achieve the desired smooth finish. Special color matched multiple coats of acrylic enamel w/gloss hardener or base coat and clear coat system is then applied. After drying we completely wet sand each individual piece. Next we reassemble all same color metal parts of the truck and then apply one final color or clear coat. To finish we add the tires/wheels/grilles and apply only the highest quality decals that are matched to original in every detail. Rest assured that every care and concern is followed during the nearly 40 hour restoration process for each truck. For shipping, we wrap the entire truck in foam to prevent scratching and then pack in either shredded paper or peanuts to prevent movement during transit.   We feel that if you wanted an original style - tank dipped - paint process that includes all the drips, runs, air bubbles, edge accumulation and rust then you would have either purchased an original Buddy L or found someone who is willing to apply that style of finish.
